What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a type of swelling that occurs when your lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, most commonly after surgery or cancer treatment. It usually affects the arms or legs, but it can appear in other areas of the body as well. The lymphatic system collects excess fluid, proteins, and waste from your tissues and returns them to your bloodstream. When this system doesn’t function properly, fluid builds up in the tissues, leading to swelling and discomfort. Beyond being uncomfortable, lymphedema also increases the risk of infection in the affected area, which can sometimes become serious or even life-threatening. While there is currently no cure, Faith Regional offers several treatment options to reduce swelling, relieve discomfort, and help improve your quality of life.

What is Lymphedema Therapy?

Lymphedema therapy combines physical therapy techniques with specialized garments or bandaging to help move fluid away from swollen areas. At Faith Regional, our certified lymphedema therapist uses gentle massage techniques to stimulate circulation and reduce swelling. The goal is to relieve discomfort and help you return to your regular daily activities. During your first visit, your therapist will take measurements of the affected area and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
