Talking with your primary care provider regularly allows for you and them to get to know each other and for them to become familiar with your health. It also allows for you to mention any potential concerns you may have and stay up to date on your vaccines and preventative services you may need.
What Preventative Services Do I Need?
Because your primary care provider will stay the same throughout your life, unless you decide to switch providers, they are your best point of contact for preventative screenings, vaccinations, and checkups throughout all of life’s stages.
Below are suggested screenings based on your age:
20s & 30s
Monthly
- Self-check skin cancer screening
- Testicular self-exam
- Breast self-exam*
Once per year
- Blood pressure screening
- Height, weight, body mass index (BMI) measurement
- Cardiovascular evaluation
- Comprehensive physical exam
- Depression screening
Every 2-5 years as recommended by your provider
- Blood sugar test
- Eye exam
- Pap exam with cervical cancer screening*
Every 5 years
As needed or recommended by your provider
- Fertility testing
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) tests
- Blood test
- Prenatal care*
- Vaccinations & preventative care
