Spiritual Care

The Spiritual Care department makes daily visitations to patients prior to surgeries and is available for other services to both patients and their families. Some of the specific patients the department visits are as follows:

  • Inpatients and residents – assess spiritual/religious needs and offer pastoral care
  • Oncology and dialysis patients as needed
  • Hospice patients in their own homes or in nursing homes
  • Behavioral health patients - spirituality groups and personal visitations
  • Addiction patients - Fifth Step in the Twelve Step recovery process
  • Cardiac rehab patients for spiritual counseling on the emotional effects of heart disease

In addition, Spiritual Care provides or arranges for religious services and rites according to patient traditions. Chaplains are available on a 24-hour on-call basis. Memorial services are conducted, in cooperation with other hospital departments, twice a year:

  • for families of patients who have died in the previous year and for parents
  • for families who have lost children due to miscarriages or stillbirths.

The department also facilitates bereavement support groups twice a year.
