The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 created new health information regulations, resulting in a new federal privacy standard. This means healthcare facilities (hospitals, physician offices and pharmacies), health insurance companies and insurance claim filing agencies are regulated and standardized regarding the use and disclosure of patient information.
