John W. Carson Foundation donates two patient transport vans to Faith Regional's Carson Cancer Center.
Norfolk – May 3, 2012: The John W. Carson Foundation recently “gave a lift” to cancer services at Faith Regional’s Carson Cancer Center with the donation of two brand new patient transportation vans.
When Johnny Carson decided that his hometown of Norfolk needed a state-of-the-art cancer center, his mission was to save lives as well as to enhance the quality of life for patients living with cancer. Cancer care is an ongoing process that requires a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists coordinating many different aspects of care over a period of time. The cancer care team at Faith Regional is responsible not just for treating and hopefully curing a patient of their cancer, but also for assisting that patient in maintaining as much of their normal routine as they can throughout the care process. For many patients, age, weather, disease stage, and financial concerns all play a part, which can make getting to daily treatments a burden for some patients and their families.
That is why the Carson Cancer Center was happy to recently announce the addition of two new patient transportation vans to its fleet, generously donated by the Carson Foundation.
“The Carson Cancer Center has always provided free transportation to patients in need, but these new vans will provide a new level of comfort for patients going through a very challenging time in their life, comforts like a DVD player, rear air and heat controls, and manual window shades, as well as new safety features including personal assist bars and a park assist system," said Dr. Mohammed Zahra, a radiation oncologist at the Center. ”Thanks to the Carson Foundation, we can eliminate one more worry from the patient’s mind and help them direct their energies toward healing.”
The late-Johnny Carson and the Carson Foundation have donated almost $10 million to the Carson Cancer Center since 1987, including the new vans. Most recently, the Carson Foundation gave more than $1 million toward technology upgrades scheduled for installation in 2012.
