Faith Regional teaches families bike safety at fifth annual Landon Bos Memorial Bicycle Rodeo
Norfolk – May 22, 2012: The Emergency Department at Faith Regional Health Services hosted its fifth annual Landon Bos Memorial Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May 19. This year, 168 kids attended the event at the new Norfolk Pedal Park, located next to the YMCA. A ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony was held for the new park prior to the event.
This year’s event featured helmet fitting, bike safety inspections, instructions about rules of the road and a bicycle obstacle course. Other activities included free bike licensing for Norfolk residents, child car seat safety checks, child DNA kits and various booths. Special attractions on display were the LifeNet helicopter, Norfolk ambulance, several race team cars, state patrol safety simulators and Legion Rider motorcycles.
“The Landon Bos Memorial Bicycle Rodeo is a great opportunity for us to promote bicycle safety and increase awareness of the importance of wearing helmets, keeping bicycles maintained and teaching kids to obey laws pertaining to bicycle use,” said Susan Cohee, Faith Regional’s Trauma Coordinator. “By educating kids about bicycle safety, we hope to prevent unnecessary injuries.”
The Bicycle Rodeo is in memory of London Bos, son of Corrine and Dave Bos. Corrine is an Emergency Department nurse at Faith Regional and Dave is employed with the Norfolk Police Department. Since starting the event in 2008, approximately 670 kids have been correctly fitted for helmets and instructed on bicycle safety.
Other sponsors of the event included Norfolk Police Division, WJAG, LiteRock 97.5, 106 Kix, US92, 94 Rock, LifeNet, Cleveland Bike and Sport, Elkhorn Valley Cycling, Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department, Norfolk Fire Division, AAA Norfolk, Cornhuskers Motor Club Foundation, Culvers, HyVee, the Norfolk Family YMCA and Target.
