A Good Night's Sleep
Staff at the Faith Regional Sleep Disorders Center, now located on second floor of Medical Offices West, are seeing the toll sleep disorders have on many of their sleep study patients.
“We have seen a variety of sleep disorders including patients with sleep apnea, restless leg and periodic limb movement disorder, and patients requiring narcolepsy testing. Currently, we are performing eight to ten sleep studies per week.” stated Diane McGill, RPSGT, Sleep Center Coordinator.
 The Sleep Center features two overnight observation rooms where a sleep study can be performed. A sleep study involves an overnight stay in a specially decorated room, much like one’s own bedroom, with devices attached to the patient to record sleeping patterns, breathing, oxygen levels, etc., and a heart monitor to detect problems during sleep. In addition, patients discuss sleep habits, lifestyles and health histories.
“I think the new center is significantly improved, in interior design and space,” said Dr. Daniel Iltchev, a Faith Regional Pulmonologist. “New equipment has and will continue to bring about significant improvements in patient care. Patients have been very pleased and we have received very positive comments regarding the facility and the staff.”
McGill also saw a prevalence of sleep disorders in the community at this year’s PATCH Health Fair where sleep disorder screens were performed.
“We had a good turnout at the fair and many of the patients screened described symptoms of snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches and other sleep apnea signs. We also saw a high number of shift workers who received information on helping them and their families cope with their sleep patterns,” added McGill.
