Adding Language in Daily Routines

There are many "everyday" moments that may be used as a learning experience for our children during our daily routines. Everyday activities provide some of the best opportunities for language growth because you child can hear/see the same signs, gestures, words and phrases repeatedly.

Although your daily routine or chores make take a bit longer to do, when you involve your child, the experience will increase understanding and facilitate language.

  • Getting dressed and undressed
  • Going up and down stairs
  • Picking up toys
  • Waking up and going to bed
  • Meal time
  • Combing hair
  • Baking a cake
  • Buying groceries
  • Washing the car
  • Making beds
  • Setting the table
  • Car trips

Remember:

Talk about what you are doing while your child is watching/playing with you.
Use simple words to describe what your child is doing, seeing, holding.
Build turns into your play and talking.
Add words to your child's ideas and words.
Create a need to communicate.
