Women's
Services
The obstetrics department provides labor and delivery services, C-sections,
a regular and Special Care nursery, and postpartum care for families in
a 70-80 mile radius of Norfolk. Faith Regional's obstetrics department delivers about 1,000 babies a year.
New
parents can enjoy the birthing experience in a relaxed,
homelike environment. Each of the four Labor-Delivery-Recovery
(LDR) rooms are decorated in soft pastels with oak accents.
The rooms are private, with a television, stereo and full
bathroom. Usually husbands or significant others stay with
expectant mothers during labor. Our LDR rooms are designed
with comfortable recliners just for this purpose. Our high-tech
LDR rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology.
At the bedside, you’ll find equipment to monitor the heart
rate of your baby during labor and a warming bed for newborns.
Whether or not to have anesthesia is a matter between you
and your physician. Your wishes will be respected and the
decision is a flexible one. All types of anesthesia are
available upon your doctor’s request and anesthesia providers
are available round-the-clock to respond to your needs.
In the event you would require a Cesarean Section, there
is a surgical suite located within the department for your
convenience.
Special
Care Nursery
Faith Regional Health Services is the only hospital in Northeast Nebraska
that can offer you and your family the security of an experienced Special
Care Nursery. In the event that your newborn requires specialized care,
as in the case of a premature birth or other problems, be assured that
our Special Care Nursery can provide critically ill newborns with expert
medical care including IV therapy, oxygen therapy, tubal feedings, assisted
breathing through the use of ventilators, and cardiac and respiratory
monitoring. All newborns in the Special Care Nursery receive one-to-one
care day and night. Special monitoring equipment is located at the nurses
station for continual observation. It is comforting to know that in the
event your newborn requires some or all of these specialized services,
you will be able to remain close to your baby.
Safety and Security
The OB staff will place a “HUGS” tag on your baby’s leg and a “KISSES” tag on your wrist. The Infant Protection System protects the baby from infant abduction and is an additional check to ensure the correct baby is brought to the correct mother. If your baby is taken outside of the OB department, an alarm will sound alerting staff. Also, DO NOT remove the tag as an alarm will sound.
After
Delivery
Immediately after delivery, your baby stays with you for quiet, unhurried
time together. It’s an opportunity for you to get to know the new life
you’ve created. This is also the time to initiate bonding to respond to
the loving attachment already forming between you and your infant. Your
baby will need to go to the nursery for admitting. This allows new mothers
some time to eat, shower and rest while dad goes with baby to observe
nurses while they take the necessary measurements. For the remainder of
your stay, you will be in one of the postpartum rooms. There are 8 semiprivate
and 5 private rooms. Here, the goal is relaxation, convenience and education
on caring for yourself and your newborn. Your baby stays in your room
as much of the time as you like. This “rooming in” policy allows you to
return baby to the nursery when you desire. Every day there is “Nap Time”
observed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to allow for sufficient rest time for moms
and babies.
Support
Classes
Our obstetrics nurses also provide a number of support
classes in the following areas:
Birthing
Prenatal
Breast Feeding
Big Kids and Babies
The department includes an in-house certified
lactation consultant to help new mothers with breast-feeding. For more
information, please call: (402)644-7520.
Children's
Services
The pediatrics department provides care for children from
newborn to age 16. Depending upon patient needs, the unit
is designed to accommodate a full range of cares such as:
close monitoring, general pediatrics, pediatric surgeries,
infections and children with special needs.
The seven-bed pediatrics unit
offers private rooms with a unique semicircular setup of
the nurse's station to allow constant visual monitoring
of patients through floor to ceiling glass windows. Each
room has the capability to use cardiac apnea (vital signs)
monitors with a visual readout at the nurses' station for
those children with medical conditions requiring closer
monitoring.
Every room in the pediatrics unit has access
to a video channel. We have a Game Boy, Nintendo and a portable CD player
for patient use. Families are welcome at all times, and the staff encourages
parents to stay with their child whenever possible to lessen his or her
anxiety.
No facility is complete without
caring, qualified personnel. The nurse-to-patient ratio
is very favorable, with one nurse for every three or four
children. All nurses in the unit are PALS (Pediatric Advanced
Life Support) certified.
Community Involvement
The pediatric staff takes an active role in improving the quality of life
and health of children by becoming involved in the community.
They work collaboratively with Northeast
Community College, teaching the PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
course to health care professionals, and work at immunization clinics
and participate with area agencies in such events as the Children's Health
Festival every April.
